Garlic Seed FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Elephant Garlic Seed

What is elephant garlic?

Elephant garlic is a mild, oversized member of the allium family, technically closer to a leek. Each bulb can grow up to 4–5 inches wide and contains jumbo cloves that are easy to peel and cook with.

Is elephant garlic real garlic?

Yes — while technically a variety of leek, elephant garlic behaves like garlic in flavor and usage. It’s milder and sweeter than traditional garlic, making it perfect for roasting, slicing, or sautéing.

Can I plant elephant garlic from the grocery store?

We don’t recommend it. Grocery garlic is often treated to prevent sprouting and may carry diseases. Seed garlic from G Farms is fresh, untreated, and grown specifically for planting — ensuring strong germination and healthy growth.

When do I plant elephant garlic?

In most climates, elephant garlic is best planted in the fall (September to November). In Southern regions like Louisiana, planting between October and early December gives the best results.

How deep do I plant garlic seed cloves?

Plant each clove 2–3 inches deep, root-side down, spaced 6–8 inches apart in rows. Cover with soil and mulch to protect through winter.

Is G Farms garlic organic?

While not USDA-certified, all our garlic is naturally grown in small batches with no sprays, no chemicals, and only natural fertilizers. It’s clean, safe, and farm-direct.

How do you ship garlic seed?

We pack all orders in USPS Flat Rate boxes with protective paper and padding to ensure your garlic arrives fresh and intact. Shipping is fast and trackable.

Can I eat garlic seed?

Yes! Our garlic seed is culinary quality — it’s the same garlic we eat ourselves. You can plant it or cook with it. Our culinary garlic offering is cleaned and trimmed specifically for kitchen use.

Where is G Farms located?

We’re a small family farm based in Louisiana, focused on growing premium elephant garlic in small, healthy batches. No big warehouses. No middlemen. Just great garlic, direct from the source.
